How Much Does a Car Key Replacement Cost in Charleston?

The Key Man··4 min read

The cost of replacing a car key varies more than most people expect. A simple spare for an older vehicle might be $75. A lost smart key for a late-model pickup can run $300 or more. Here is what determines where your job falls in that range.

What Affects the Cost

Your Vehicle's Year, Make, and Model

Newer vehicles use more sophisticated key and fob technology, which requires more expensive blanks and more advanced programming equipment. Older vehicles — generally pre-2000 — often use simple mechanical keys with no chip, which are inexpensive to cut and require no programming.

The Type of Key

Basic transponder key: Cut and programmed, typically $75 to $175. The chip must match your vehicle's immobilizer system.

Remote head key: The key with fob buttons built in. Typically $150 to $250 cut and programmed.

Smart key / push-to-start fob: The keyless entry and ignition fob. Typically $200 to $400 depending on make and model. Toyota, Honda, and Chevrolet tend to be on the lower end. Ford, Chrysler, and certain Nissan models can push toward the top.

Mechanical key only (no chip): $25 to $75 for a copy. If all keys are lost, add the cost of obtaining the key code.

Whether You Have a Working Key

This is the single biggest cost variable. If you have a working key:

  • We read the existing cuts directly — no key code purchase required
  • Programming can often be done faster
  • Total cost is significantly lower

If all keys are lost:

  • We must obtain your key code from the manufacturer using your VIN
  • Key codes cost $15 to $85 depending on the vehicle
  • Programming must be done from scratch, which takes longer on some vehicles

The takeaway: Always get a spare made while you still have a working key. It will cost you significantly less than replacing a lost key later.

Your Location

Jobs in central Charleston, Mount Pleasant, North Charleston, and West Ashley are within our standard service area with no added fees. More remote areas like Wadmalaw Island, Edisto, or Ridgeville may include a trip charge.

Dealer vs. Mobile Locksmith

Dealerships can replace keys, but they require your vehicle to be towed to their location, charge an hourly shop rate, and mark up the cost of parts. For most common makes and models, a mobile locksmith handles the same job faster and at a lower total cost — and we come to you.
