Why Chevrolet keys fail differently
Chevrolet key problems tend to start small and get worse. Soft buttons, a loose hinge, one key that is almost gone. Knowing what is actually failing before touching the hardware is what keeps the job clean.
Chevy key fobs, especially on Silverados and Tahoes, use rubber button pads that break down over time. The buttons start feeling soft, then stop registering cleanly, then stop working altogether. A new battery will not fix this. The fob itself needs to be replaced and programmed.
Older Malibus, Impalas, and some Equinox models used flip keys. The hinge is the first thing to go. Once it loosens, the blade wobbles during use and eventually the key becomes unreliable in the ignition. Most customers wait too long on this one.
Not all Chevrolet key programming is the same. Some vehicles require direct module communication through Techline Connect or SPS. Generic locksmith tools either fail outright or produce a key that starts the car once and then loses authorization. The right equipment matters on these jobs.
Silverado, Tahoe, and Traverse models with HU100 or B111 blade cuts cannot be duplicated at a hardware store or most key kiosks. The cut requires precision equipment, and the chip registration has to follow. Both have to be correct or the vehicle will not start.
Chevrolet Key Programming
Every Chevrolet with a transponder or push-start system requires the key to be recognized by the vehicle before it will start.
Programming is part of the job every time — spare key, fob replacement, or all keys lost.
Some Chevrolet models require direct communication with the vehicle's systems to complete programming correctly.
What to expect
Adding a spare
The fastest job. Cut and programmed while your existing key still works. Most spare key and fob jobs done in under 30 minutes.
Key fob replacement
Basic remotes, flip key shells, and proximity fobs for push-start models. Programmed to your vehicle before we leave.
No working key
Immobilizer reset and new keys programmed from scratch. No tow, no dealer appointment. Done at your location.
All keys lost
A missing key on a Chevrolet is not an automatic dealership situation. We reset the immobilizer on-site and program new keys from scratch. The vehicle does not need to be moved. Most jobs are done in under an hour.
Most jobs are completed in about 30 minutes. All-keys-lost service typically runs under an hour.
Programming capability
Some Chevrolet key programming jobs require direct module communication that standard tools cannot complete. We have access to Techline Connect and SPS, the same systems Chevrolet dealerships use, so we can handle the harder jobs correctly the first time.
This is what makes a difference on newer Silverados, all-keys-lost Tahoes, and push-start Equinox or Traverse models. Generic hardware either stalls out or produces a key that loses authorization after a short time. We avoid that problem entirely.
Systems we use
Techline Connect
GM's dealer diagnostic and programming platform. Required for module-level key programming on newer Chevrolet vehicles.
SPS
Service Programming System. Used for immobilizer configuration and key authorization across a wide range of Chevrolet models.

Key quality
OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer — the genuine part made by the manufacturer, the same as what came with your Chevrolet.
OEM and OEM refurbished keys are typically sourced from the same manufacturers Chevrolet uses, including brands like Strattec and ACDelco. That means the fit, function, and reliability match what came with the vehicle.
A few things worth thinking about:
Aftermarket
A functional, lower-cost option that works the same way as OEM for most everyday situations. Good fit for older vehicles or when budget is the main concern.
OEM Refurbished
A genuine Chevrolet key that has been tested and reset. You get OEM reliability at a lower price than buying new. A solid middle-ground choice.
OEM
A brand-new genuine part built to Chevrolet's original specifications. Best fit for newer vehicles, high-use daily drivers, or when you plan to keep the vehicle long-term.

FAQ
A fresh battery rules out one cause, but it does not fix rubber button wear or a failing circuit board. Chevy fobs, especially on older Silverados and Tahoes, have rubber pads that deteriorate. Once the pad breaks down the button loses contact with the board. The fob needs to be replaced and reprogrammed.
Yes. All-keys-lost Chevrolet service does not require a working key. We access the immobilizer directly, reset it, and program new keys from scratch on-site. No dealership and no tow truck required.
Any Chevrolet with a transponder, proximity fob, or push-start system requires programming. The vehicle has to recognize the key before it will start. Cutting the blade correctly is only part of the job.
The hinge on Chevy flip keys wears down with regular use. Once it goes, the blade wobbles and puts stress on the key during ignition. Replacing it early avoids the blade becoming an ignition problem on top of the cosmetic one.
Techline Connect is the dealer-level programming system GM uses for module communication on newer Chevrolet vehicles. Some key programming jobs on these vehicles require it. Generic tools either fail to complete the process or produce a key that loses authorization after a short time.
Chevrolet key fob replacement runs $125 to $185 for a basic fob or transponder key when you still have a working key. Smart key or proximity fob replacement runs $225 to $295.
