What makes Mazda different
CX-5 and CX-50 fobs aren't interchangeable even when they look the same. Older Mazda3 and Mazda6 keys use a completely different system. The year tells us what we're working with before we arrive.
CX-5, CX-50, and Mazda3 use a passive proximity system with push-start authorization. The fob and car are in constant low-level communication. When the CX-5 shows a key warning or the push-start button doesn't respond on the first press, the fob battery is the first thing to check, but not the last. A board starting to fail produces the same symptoms.
Older Mazda3, Mazda6, and Tribute models used chip-based transponder keys. They look like a standard car key, but the vehicle reads the chip electronically on every start. A cut-only copy from a hardware store will turn the ignition without starting the engine. The chip registration is part of the job.
The CX-50 uses fob hardware that differs from earlier CX-5 generations, they're not interchangeable even if they look similar. Getting the right fob for the year matters before anything gets ordered or programmed. This is one of the reasons we ask for the year and trim before arriving.
Getting a spare made while one key still works is a much shorter job than resetting the immobilizer from scratch on a CX-5 or Mazda3 with push-start. The all-keys-lost process adds time and requires more steps. If you're running on one fob that's starting to feel unreliable, that's the right time to call.

FAQ
Yes. We program Mazda proximity fobs and transponder keys on site. The programming is done at the vehicle, no dealer appointment, no tow.
No. The CX-50 uses updated fob hardware that differs from the CX-5 lineup. Even fobs that look similar won't program correctly if they're from the wrong generation.
Usually the fob battery is low enough to make the proximity authorization inconsistent. Replace it first. If the issue continues with a fresh battery, the fob board is likely the problem.
Both. The cut and the chip registration both have to match the vehicle. A key that's only cut by profile will turn the ignition without starting the engine.
