Jeep key situations range from simple to complicated
A Wrangler on one key and a Grand Cherokee with a failing smart fob are very different jobs. The model, year, and trim all affect which system is involved.
Grand Cherokee smart keys have changed a lot across generations
Grand Cherokee has used multiple fob styles over the years, and the programming requirements differ meaningfully between them. What works on a 2015 doesn't apply to a 2022. The year and trim tell us which system we're dealing with, assuming they're the same is how jobs go wrong.
Wrangler JK and JL keys are more straightforward than the newer Jeeps
Most Wrangler generations use transponder keys rather than proximity fobs. These are cleaner to replace, but a hardware store copy still won't start the engine. The chip has to be registered to the Wrangler's immobilizer, and the cut has to match the cylinder. Both matter.
Compass and Cherokee push-start glitches are usually the fob
Mid-size Jeeps with push-start are more sensitive to fob battery life than owners expect. The 'key not found' or 'key not detected' message usually shows up when the battery is almost gone, not dead, just low enough that the proximity loop becomes unreliable. If the message keeps coming back after a new battery, the board inside the fob is usually next.

Why does my Jeep Grand Cherokee sometimes not recognize the key?
Usually the fob battery is low enough to make the proximity loop unreliable without being fully dead. Replace the battery first. If it keeps happening, the board inside the fob is probably the issue.
Are all Jeep Grand Cherokee fobs the same?
