What makes Subaru different
H-chip transponder keys on older models and proximity fobs on newer ones are different jobs. The year and trim determine what we bring and how the programming works.
The first sign is usually reduced range — the car takes longer to recognize the fob, or the push-button doesn't respond on the first press. The board inside is starting to degrade. It's not urgent until it is. A fob that works at one foot and nothing else is a fob that's about to stop working entirely.
Older Outback, Forester, and Impreza models used the H-chip transponder system. Programming these requires either a working key to clone from, or the vehicle's pin code to program from scratch. Cloning is the faster path when an original is available. Both require the right equipment, a hardware store cut won't start the engine.
These models tend to have button contact issues before the electronics fail. When certain buttons stop responding, especially the lock or hatch release, the contacts inside the shell are usually the problem. It's a cheaper fix than a full fob replacement when caught early.
Losing every key to a newer Outback or Forester with push-start means the immobilizer has to be cleared before new fobs will register. This is different from adding a spare to a working system, it takes more time and the steps are more involved. Getting a spare made while one key still works avoids this entirely.

FAQ
Yes. We handle Subaru smart key fobs and transponder keys on site. Programming is done at the vehicle, no dealer appointment needed.
H-chip is Subaru's older transponder system. The chip is embedded in the key bow and registers with the vehicle's immobilizer. A cut-only copy won't start the engine — the chip has to match the vehicle's enrollment.
The fob board is likely degrading. When the proximity range drops significantly or the start button becomes inconsistent, the fob electronics are usually the cause. Replace the battery first to rule that out. If it keeps happening, the fob needs to be replaced.
Yes. The immobilizer reset takes more time than a standard spare key job, but it's done on site. The vehicle doesn't need to go anywhere.
