What makes Toyota different
What works on a 2009 Corolla doesn't apply to a 2022 RAV4. The right service path depends on reading the actual system, not just the badge.
RAV4, Highlander, Camry push-start: these fobs handle proximity detection, start authorization, and carry a mechanical blade inside the shell. When the shell loosens or the board becomes inconsistent, the whole system goes unreliable at once. It's not just one button. The fob and the car are in constant communication, and when that breaks down, the symptoms don't always point to an obvious cause.
It usually means the fob battery is critically low, but not always. Sometimes the board itself is failing, or the car's receiver is having trouble locking onto the signal. A fresh battery is where you start, not where you end. If the warning keeps showing up after a battery swap, the fob needs a closer look.
Older Corollas, Camrys, and Tacomas used chip-based transponder keys. The car reads the chip electronically on every start. A cut-only copy from a hardware store will turn the ignition without firing the engine. The chip and the cut both need to match. These are straightforward jobs but require the right equipment.
Smart key owners rarely use the blade hidden inside the fob, until they have to. A worn blade or a shell that traps it is a bad time to find out. If you've had the same fob for six or seven years and never tested the insert, that's worth addressing before it becomes the reason you're locked out.

FAQ
Yes. A fresh battery won't fix a worn shell, damaged button contact, or failing board. If the warning came back after a battery swap, the fob itself needs to be looked at.
Usually a critically low fob battery, but sometimes the board is failing or the car's receiver is losing the signal. It can also appear after impact or water exposure. A battery swap is the first step. If it comes back, that tells you something.
Almost always yes. Doing it with one working key is significantly simpler and cheaper than the all-keys-lost path on a push-start RAV4 or Highlander. That job takes longer and costs more.
Yes. The blade is cut to the door and ignition, so a replacement has to be cut to the right specification. It's not interchangeable with another Toyota's blade.
