What makes Kia different
Programming procedures, fob generations, and IMMO configurations differ across Kia models and years. What works on a 2019 Sportage doesn't apply to a 2023 Sorento.
Sportage, Sorento, and K5 use push-start proximity fobs that feel similar to Hyundai's, but programming sequences differ by generation and sometimes by trim. A fob from the wrong year won't program correctly. When the Sportage or Sorento shows a key warning, the fob battery is the first check, but not always the last answer.
Older Kia models and base-trim vehicles use transponder ignition keys. They look like any other car key, but there's a chip embedded in the plastic bow. The car reads it electronically every time you start. A cut-only hardware store copy will turn the ignition without starting the engine.
Kia push-start fobs tend to wear at the button contacts before the board fails. When a Kia fob works sometimes but not others, especially on the lock or unlock button, the contacts inside the shell are usually the first thing to check. It's a different fix than a failing board, and the diagnosis changes what gets replaced.
Adding a second key to a Kia push-start system is straightforward when the original is present and recognized. Getting a spare while one still works is a faster job than starting from scratch. The all-keys-lost process on a Sorento or K5 adds time and requires a full IMMO reset, worth avoiding if one key still functions.

FAQ
Yes. We handle Kia smart key fobs and transponder keys on site. The programming is done at the vehicle, no dealer appointment, no tow.
Usually the button contacts inside the shell are worn. If certain buttons respond inconsistently, the contacts are typically the issue before the board. The diagnosis determines what gets replaced.
No. We program Kia transponder keys on site. A cut-only duplicate won't start the engine — the chip registration is part of the job.
Yes. It requires a full IMMO reset before new fobs will register, which takes more time than adding a spare. We bring the equipment to wherever the vehicle is parked.
