One of the first questions people ask when they lose a car key is how long this is going to take. The honest answer: most jobs are done in 20 to 30 minutes. Some vehicles take closer to an hour. Here is what determines the difference.
Step 1 — Getting the Key Code (5 to 10 minutes)
If all keys are lost, we need to obtain the key code specific to your vehicle's VIN. This code tells us the exact cuts required to open your locks and turn your ignition.
An experienced locksmith can pull this code directly from the manufacturer database. You do not need to go to the dealership. If you still have a working key or the blade of a broken key, this step is skipped entirely — we read the existing cuts directly.
Key codes typically cost $15 to $85 depending on the vehicle.
Step 2 — Key Cutting (about 10 minutes)
Once we have the code or a key to copy, we cut the new blade using a precision key cutting machine. A careful locksmith takes their time here — a key cut even slightly off will not turn smoothly and can wear out your ignition over time.
For Kia and Hyundai vehicles, many models use a mechanical key only, meaning no chip programming is required. Once the key is cut, you are done.
Step 3 — Programming (2 to 30 minutes)
Most modern vehicles require the new key to be programmed to communicate with the car's immobilizer system. Without this step, the key will turn the ignition but the engine will not start.
Programming is done using professional-grade software connected to your vehicle's OBD port. The time varies by make and model:
- Simple transponder keys: 2 to 5 minutes
- Standard remote head keys: 5 to 15 minutes
- Smart keys / push-to-start fobs: 15 to 30 minutes
- Certain luxury or European models: may require dealer-level tools
A small number of vehicles allow "on-board programming," where you can follow a sequence of steps using existing keys to add a new one. Research your specific vehicle thoroughly before attempting this — some require two working keys to complete the procedure.
Total Time Summary
| Situation | Estimated Time | |---|---| | Have a working key, need a spare | 15 to 20 min | | Lost all keys, standard transponder | 30 to 45 min | | Lost all keys, smart key / push-to-start | 45 to 60 min |
